Vietnam to bring anti-corruption lessons into schools

(VNN) - The Prime Minister has approved plans to add lessons on anti-corruption into education programmes and refresher training courses.

Dr Do Gia Thu, director of the Legal Department under the Government Inspectorate, which is in charge of compiling the plan, said the aim of the plan is to heighten awareness and responsibility in the fight against corruption.

Under the programme, students of schools and universities will need more learning hours to include anti-corruption lessons. Educators are warning that students, already burdened with the current curriculums, may become overloaded.

However, Thu says plan compilers did consider the overloaded curriculums of university and students when drawing up the plan. Therefore, he said, anti-corruption lessons will be designed in the way to fit different education levels.

For example, lessons for school students will be mainly provided as part of citizenship education hours or other social subjects, without the need for a separate section on anti-corruption.

As for university education, the aim of the anti-corruption programme is to equip students with a basic knowledge of corruption and the fight against it and to heighten awareness of a citizen’s responsibility to fight it.

However, students at law schools or those studying administration or other relevant disciplines will be expected to cover corruption more widely.

“I don’t think that students will be overloaded,” Thu said

Thu says that training teachers who will give anti-corruption lessons is an important part of the plan implementation.

“Teachers should be the first people to learn about anti-corruption,” Thu said, adding that educators should start by saying ‘no’ to exam fraud.

It is expected that training courses will be organized for teachers, which will take at least five days.

As part of the preparation for the project implementation, a ‘bank’ of documentation on anti-corruption will be built up, while information will be provided on schools’ websites for students to access. Research on anti-corruption will be carried to further serve the teaching of anti-corruption in schools.
