State President Nguyen Minh Triet made this statement at a grand meeting in Hanoi on September 1 to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day (September 2).
Present at the meeting were Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, former Party leaders Do Muoi and Le Kha Phieu, State President Nguyen Minh Triet, former State Presidents Le Duc Anh and Tran Duc Luong, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, Chairman of the National Assembly (NA) Nguyen Phu Trong, former NA Chairman Nguyen Van An and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Huynh Dam.
The event was also attended by other State and Party leaders, heroic mothers, leaders from various ministries and sectors, Hanoi people, ambassadors and international friends.
At the meting, President Triet reviewed major historical events during the past 65 years in commemoration of late President Ho Chi Minh who led the Vietnamese people to the patriotic revolutionary path and expressed deep gratitude to the million of people who laid down their lives for national independence as well as revolutionary veterans and heroic mothers.
The August Revolution and the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam shaped the Vietnamese history of a glorious victory in freedom, independence, self-reliant spirit, creativity, solidarity and unanimity between the Party and people, said Mr Triet.
Twenty years after implementing the Doi Moi (Renewal) process, Vietnam has recorded tremendous achievements, which helped to raise the country’s status in the global arena and demonstrated the correct leadership of the CPV which led the Vietnamese revolution to overcome every difficulty and claim victory.
The ongoing renewal process has created a firm foundation for Vietnam to speed up industrialisation and modernisation. However, there is still much that need to be done to ensure the quality of economic growth and increase the productivity and efficiency and competitive capacity of the national economy.
Mr Triet said the State needs to maintain socialist-oriented targets and develop a ten-year strategy (2010-2020) in line with requirements for national development.
Overall targets towards 2020 are to develop Vietnam into a modern industrial nation in which socio-political stability is ensured, socialist democracy is fully exercised and people’s material and spiritual lives are improved significantly, said Mr Triet.
President Triet underlined the need to renew the form of the CPV leadership towards building a transparent and strong Party and a State of the people, by the people and for the people and a law-governed socialist State where social order is maintained.
He said continuing the August Revolution’s path is to firmly protect the national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, the Party and State and people and socialist regime. Reinforcing national defense and ensuring national security is a key and regular task of the Party, State and armed forces as well as the people.
President Triet said it is essential to effectively implement the policy of expanding external relations, independence and self-reliance to help Vietnam develop on a rapid and sustainable basis.
At the meeting, many representatives from social organisations and young Party members promised to make a greater contribution to the country.
